STI & HIV/AIDS Awareness & Education
Through our comprehensive reproductive health component, the Institute educates youth about the importance of making healthy choices and contraception methods to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy, STIs and HIV/AIDS. A primary program component is to emphasize abstinence as a realistic method of contraception. .
Program Goals
Program Objectives
- Reduce one of more sexual behaviors that lead to sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.
- Reduce other risky behaviors such as substance abuse and delinquency
- Increase the percentage of youth who choose to abstain from sexual intercourse
- Increase the number of sexually active youth to use a condom correctly and consistently (at each sexual encounter)
- Encourage parents to talk with sexually active teens about HIV/AIDS and condom use
- Encourage teens to date partners close to their own ages, rather than older partners
- Emphasize the risk of having multiple or older partners A decrease in the number of youth engaging in sexual activity
Participants
- Male & female adolescents
- Youth and young adults, ages 10 – 21
- Elementary, middle & high school students
Program Design
Deliver, and consistently reinforce, a clear message about abstaining from sexual activity and/ or using condoms. Participants will also learn interpersonal and communication skills, as well as explore their own values, goals and options.
